I raced the Olympic distance at Seahorse this year, the water was the warmest I have ever swam in at this event. Normally Seahorse is a cold swim, but this year the water was close to 70 degrees. The run was also warmer than usual, 3-D did a great job and provided cold wet towels on the run course.
Last year I raced this event and had a hard time on the run, so this year I was looking forward to improving my time with added run training. In 2017 I finished in 5th place in my age group with a time of 2:50:21, this year I was 4th in my age group with a time of 2:50:22.
One second slower, most of the time difference was from a slower bike leg that I had thought would happen because of the more running I have been doing. I did not expect the run to also be slower, I think the heat may have been a factor. I did feel better on the run so I am confident that I am in better shape this year, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

I raced the seahorse Olympic Relay again this year and Katie Bridges swam again (thanks Katie!). I used to race the relay until I switched over to racing duathlons however 3D racing got rid of the du last year so back to the relay it is.
Katie had a great swim and the ride course is fun and one I know well. Due to the much higher heat this year I kept the effort on the ride a bit lower than last year but still felt good and kept it over 23 for the 25.5 miles. The run was a different story completely. By the time I hit the run it had warmed up quite a bit and I knew within the first couple of miles it was going to be hard – it was. The first lap was not too bad but by the second lap, I was hurting.
I backed off quite a bit so I could avoid heat issues but the heat took a lot out of me. I can say it was the worst 10k I have done in a long while. Overall I was at 8.45 pace vs 7:30 last year (yikes). But I finished:).
